IUI treatment with donor sperm
IUI treatment with donor sperm (IUI-D) is a simple fertility treatment carried out by an experienced healthcare professional. At Cryos Clinic in Aarhus, we offer both natural cycle IUI and stimulated cycle IUI.
IUI treatment with donor sperm is a popular option for single mothers-to-be and couples trying to have a baby. The best candidates for IUI treatment are young and healthy women with healthy female reproductive systems (fallopian tubes). If no fertility issues are suspected in the woman, the chances of getting pregnant from IUI with donor sperm are good.
Based on the information from the Medical History Form, which includes questions regarding your general medical history, lifestyle, menstrual cycle, and previous attempts to get pregnant (if any), our authorized healthcare professionals can help determine whether IUI is the recommended course of action for you. Together, we plan a personalized course of treatment that suits your needs.
Before you proceed, please be aware that according to Danish law, Cryos Clinic can only treat women up to their 46th birthday.
What is IUI treatment?
In this type of fertility treatment, insemination is performed by a healthcare professional who injects sperm directly into the woman's uterus at the time of ovulation. This allows the sperm cells to get close to the egg, which increases the chance of a sperm cell fertilizing the egg. IUI treatment with donor sperm is also known as IUI-D.
Depending on the regularity of your menstrual cycle, we might recommend doing one or more ultrasound scans to determine the right time for the IUI treatment, and a mild hormone stimulation to stimulate the LH surge and/or an ovulation injection might be necessary to regulate the egg production and the time of ovulation.
If you prefer to limit your travel, you can arrange for ultrasound scans at a clinic closer to home. In that way, you only need to visit Cryos Clinic on the day of your treatment. Please note that ultrasounds performed outside Cryos Clinic will be at your own expense. Contact us for more information on this option.
How much does IUI treatment cost?
The price of one round of IUI treatment with donor sperm at Cryos Clinic start at EUR 1.200 (incl. VAT). At Cryos Clinic, the donor sperm needed for the treatment is included in the specific treatment type. Therefore, the only thing you need to consider is which sperm donor you would like to use. Depending on the type of IUI you are having, there might be additional costs for fertility medication.

A guide to IUI treatment at Cryos Clinic
Here is an introduction to what you can expect when having IUI treatment with donor sperm at Cryos Clinic. Please go to Patient guides for a detailed step-by-step guide to IUI-D at Cryos Clinic.
Planning and preparing for your IUI treatment
- Fill out the contact form: The first step in planning your IUI treatment with donor sperm at Cryos Clinic is to request a free consultation with one of our healthcare professionals.
- Initial consultation: Once you have completed the contact request form, we will send you an email with a link to our Medical History Form. Before the initial consultation, a healthcare professional from Cryos Clinic will review the information from the Medical History Form, and together, we plan a personalised course of treatment that suits your needs.
- Begin hormone stimulation (only for stimulated cycle): If the healthcare professional at Cryos Clinic determines that your chances of pregnancy are higher with IUI-D in a stimulated cycle, you must visit Cryos Clinic in Aarhus for one or more ultrasound scans before we further plan the course of treatment. If you prefer to limit your travel, you may – at your own expense – arrange for ultrasound scans at a clinic closer to home. The hormone stimulation will typically consist of tablets and/or injections at home.
- Timing your treatment with your ovulation: Timing is important in IUI-D treatment, as the insemination should take place as close to the ovulation as possible, to increase your chances of success. The timing of your ovulation will vary depending on your cycle and whether you are taking fertility medication. Once you know the expected time of your ovulation, we will schedule a date and time for your insemination.
- Order treatment with donor sperm: Before the insemination, you must find a sperm donor and order an IUI treatment with donor sperm. Contact us by email if you have any questions on when and how to purchase your treatment.
The IUI treatment procedure
On the day of your insemination, one of our experienced healthcare professionals will be ready to take you through the procedure. You can of course bring your partner, a friend, or a family member to share this special moment with you.
You will be shown to a private room, where you can relax and wait while we thaw the donor sperm to be used for your insemination. The thawing process takes about 30 minutes and is done after your arrival to ensure that we maintain the high quality of the sperm.
Once the sperm is ready, the insemination is carried out by a healthcare professional who injects the sperm into your uterus using a thin plastic tube. For most people, IUI treatment is pain-free, and the procedure takes only a few minutes – all in all, you can expect to spend about one hour at the clinic.
After your IUI treatment
After having your IUI treatment, you can return to your everyday life. Two weeks later you can take a urine pregnancy test to see if the treatment was successful. We know it might be tempting to take an early pregnancy test sooner than that, but some fertility medications may give you a false-positive if you test too soon.
If your pregnancy test is positive two weeks after your IUI treatment, we offer a free early pregnancy scan at the clinic about three weeks later (in pregnancy week 7). Hopefully, we will be able to see a heartbeat, and your treatment at Cryos Clinic will be considered complete.
If you do not become pregnant, the treatment can be repeated in your next cycle. Our healthcare professionals will also be able to guide you on other treatment options if the treatment was unsuccessful.
